Natôi's - The old people regretted his coming here. He introduced some regulations which were unpopular and a bloc determined opposition to him.

The Tim Yee Company migrated to Macao, having secured the exclusive privilege of importing and preparing opium there. The Company was a very wealthy one, and they had all the influence of the wealthy Hong to back them. They had their agents in Hong Kong where the Californian and Australian merchants are, and they made sales to them to be delivered in Australia or California.

At the commencement of the opposition, they got steam launches to meet the large steamers leaving Hong Kong for Australia and America and put opium on board. This Government managed to stop that, but they arranged with a line of steamers which runs between here and Shanghai to go to Macao for the opium. For this deviation, they used to pay $2000 (although it was only 8 hours steaming) in addition to freight; but they landed their opium at Shanghai, and transshipped there unto the Dr. M. Steamers whatever opium was intended for Australia.
