prevalent had set in and the matter was urgent, I at once authorized the appointment of an Engine driver and an Assistant at an annual cost of $240, enabled to do this without incurring extra expense as Mr McEuen had resigned the post of Assistant Superintendent of the Fire Brigade in consequence of taking up his residence out of the town, and I did not see any necessity of replacing him as one Assistant Superintendent appeared to me sufficient.

252 Br sufficient, an opinion which I subsequently found was shared by M. Creagh, the Superintendent. A saving of $480 was thereby effected. On the completion of the launch, authorized by Telegraphic Despatch of 10th October, 1882, for the purpose of employing the Engine as a Floating Fire Engine, it became necessary to provide a crew for her, and the Council have voted a sum of $1660 for this purpose per year. The Estimates of this will therefore be exceeded by $420.
