an application for a grant in aid of the Construction of a Roman Catholic School managed under the direction of Bishop Raimondi by the Christian Brothers, which has recently been erected in the City of Victoria and which was formally opened by me on the 6th January last.

2. It will be seen by referenced correspondence that an application for a grant in aid was made before completion of the erection or at the time of the erection of the building in 1881 but that no definite reply has ever been returned. Importance is however attached to a promise, made by Governor Hennessy in a speech at the laying of the foundation stone, that a considerable grant would be made by Government under the regulations. Plans and specifications were, it appears, exhibited on that occasion but no formal approval has ever been given by the Governor - this condition precedent.
