undertake the duties of Sanitary Inspector who would have to superintend the carrying out of some of the important recommendations made by Mr. Chadwick. As this is a matter I have very pressing thought it better to submit some observations on this point at once, instead of waiting for the arrival of Sir George Bowen.

The Surveyor General, Registrar General and Colonial Surgeon, the three heads of Departments who will be principally concerned in carrying out Mr. Chadwick's suggestions, agree in recommending for the post of Sanitary Inspector, Mr. Hugh McCallum, Apothecary and Analyst at the Civil Hospital, and Mr. Chadwick himself, it is stated, expressed his opinion when here that this gentleman was the person best fitted for the post. Mr. McCallum's salary as Apothecary and Analyst is $1,728 with free quarters, fuel, and lighting, advantages which are considered equivalent to
