100 have attended. receiving Some days before the memorial of the Chinese, the Captain Superintendent of Police in forwarding the last quarterly report of gambling cases dealt with by the Police, called my attention to the state of the Law which was in his opinion, insufficient to enable the Police to act efficiently, and he suggested the amendments which in his opinion were necessary.

I have referred the Chinese Memorial as well as the letter of the Captain Superintendent of Police to the Attorney General to advise whether any change in the existing legislation on the subject of Gambling is in his opinion desirable, but as Sir George Bowen will so soon arrive, it will probably be better to leave him to decide what changes, if any, should be introduced. I have also asked the Captain Superintendent of Police to furnish a confidential report on that part of Dr Hokai's address referring to the evil results
