The information given in lix
John Pope Hennery's despatch with
respect to tree planting by the Chinese
is of great interest. It is the more
remarkable as the reports of travellers
have always represented the policy of the Chinese people to be to entirely
denude the country, except within the | precincts of sacred edifices, of all
arborescent vegetation. It would
certainly be interesting to ascertain the
causes and growth of their apparent
change of practice in this respect.

Jakow, Formosa. You will observe from
