of careful continuous tidal observations not
to mention their great scientific value, and
that they will be induced to undertake them.
The observations do not necessarily involve The use of a self registering great expense. The use of
tide-gauge is desirable, but not imperative.
Indeed, in many places, where the maintenance
of so delicate an instrument may be difficult, it will be preferable to record the height of the tide as shewn by a float and graduated
rod, by reliefs of watchmen. as was the
