or an average of $3,810.35 for the five years or $930 above the amount approved of by Lord KIMBERLEY or $450.00 above the amount proposed by the Governor to be paid to each of the Deputy Registrars.

The appointment of Registrar of Companies has this year come into the Registry and so has that of Appraiser, Sheriff, and Bailiff. These offices were formerly personal and the respective holder of them had to do the work and obtain assistance for himself if he required it, and upon the understanding that the duties were not to interfere with those of the Registrar's Office.

From the time of HUFFAM's conviction nothing has been settled in the office, various acting appointments have been made, but it is highly desirable that some permanent arrangements should be made as soon as possible. Mr. SANGSTER could not attend to the Summary Court so much as formerly, and in 1879 Mr. SNOWDEN who had been for some time previously complaining of the great need he had for a clerk got Mr. HAZELAND appointed at a salary of $600 per annum, In 1881 the salary was increased to $1,080 upon condition that Mr. HAZELAND should act as Clerk to the Summary Court. By this arrangement Mr. SANGSTER was released from attending in Court when the Court was sitting which is as a rule usually three or four days a week.

In 1881 also Mr. BARROS, who was originally employed by Mr. PLUNKET in 1878 and had been retained in the Registrar's Office ever since owing to his services having become absolutely necessary, was placed upon the estimates at a salary of $480. His
