We have seen that for the last 3 years before Mr. ALEXANDER'S death the salary

and fees of the Registrar had averaged $7,438.34.

If the arrangement had continued the Registrar would have received during the 5 years ending December, 1881,

Salary as Registrar and Official Trustee,

Fees &c., as above,......

as compared with,

In 1882 he will receive as salary,.

.$4,800.00

1,404.01

$6,204.01

4,976.12

.$4,800.00

and it is proposed that he should receive for commutation

of fees as Official Trustee,

240.00

$5,040.00

The fees received by him for the half year ending 30th June, which under the old arrangements would have been taken by him to his own use, have been as follows:-

Official Assignee,

Official Administrator,

Official Trustee,

Registrar of Companies,

Interest on balances,

..$629.18

347.60

154.68

297.00

475.22

$1,903.68

For the half year his salary and commutation allowance would be $2,520. Had

he been permitted to receive the amounts previously allowed his income for the half year would have been :-

Salary as Registrar and Official Trustee, Fees as above less fees of Official Trustee,

.$2,400.00

1,749.00

$4,149.00

or at the rate of $8,298 per annum.

Of course, as I have pointed out before, a good deal of this work represented by fees has to be done now in the office by the other officers of the Court, or if done by the Registrar the other duties of his office have to be performed by one of the Deputy Registrars or some one else, yet the Registrar feels that the increase of $1,200 in his salary since 1860, the date of the Civil List, is hardly commensurate with the increased duties and responsibilities which he has to perform. If business continues as it has done this year, and the receipts of the Court, and of the various offices continue to keep up as they have done I should be glad to see the salary of the Registrar raised to $5,760 per annum. This, looking at the various duties he has to perform independently of his duties as Registrar, would, I think, compare favourably with the salaries paid in other Colonies.
