The English named Lhe bay afler Lhe breakwaler /

In Lhe early days, trams ran along Electric

by the Hongkong Electric Company of a power

which was lransfcrred from the cluster around

the shape of seven boulders embracing each

In 1880, the Government granled a big piece

of desolate land Lo Lhe Lhen Bulterfield and Swire

Company (Lhc Swire Group nowadays) Lo build a

sugar refinery. 'The present Quarry Bay area was

a bay where rock from the hillsides were quarried.

The Cantonese name "Tsak Yue Chung" reveals

Lhat il was a small slream where crucian carp could

be found in Lhe 19Lh cenlury. The easlern parl of

Quarry Bay. namely "Quarry Point" was largely

owned by Swire and Taikoo Dockyard began

operalions in 1907. In Lhe early 1970's, Lhe Swire

Group decided lo restructure their holdings in the

area. Subsequenlly, the land (mainly docl{)1ard

area) was used lo develop a large private housing

estate, Taikoo Shing, a bristling residential complex

commercial and retail outlets.

However, the Sai \Van Ho, Shau Kei \Van and

Aldrich Bay area retained, until the mid 1970's,

Lhcir characlcrislics as a rural markcl and fishing

village oulposl. \Vilh Lhe subsequenl massive

development of Chai \Van and the completion

the Eastern Corridor, Shau Kei \Van and the

neighbouring area became a focal po int of

interchange covering the Shek 0 , 'Tai Tam and

Stanley sub-districts. It soon developed into a

nourishing and buslling mini-melropolis and in

every way reminiscenl of Lhe more modern parl of

'T'aikoo Shing and Quarry Bay which are somelimes

rel'erred lo as "Central Easl".
