由皇后大道中丶皇后大道西交界上
望水坑口街，
1977年。
此街原為一大水坑。
1841年，英軍
沿此水坑旁登上右邊一座被稱為「佔領
角」的小山崗，宣示佔領港島。此街早
期名為「下荷李活道」，
1890年代改名
為波些臣街

中文名改為水坑口街。從左遍兩三間花
店樓上的「走馬騎樓」，仍可感受到二十
世紀初「水坑口風月區」的餘韻。右方月
利麻雀耍樂的店舖所在，早期為於
1880
年代開業的宴瓊林酒家，其對上可見現
仍營業之朱榮記的招牌。

從皇后街（早期又名和興西街）東望皇后大道西，
1994年。
左方有騎樓柱的三層唐樓，是著名涼果店任合興。其右方為以魚麵馳名的潮州飯店斗記，以及興
記。其樓上亦為名店尚興，旁邊是潮州食肆林立，有包括兩興及陳勤記的「潮州巷」（又名香馨里）。其
以西一帶的樓宇稍後全被清拆，後建成住宅屋苑帝后華庭。

由修打蘭街東望著名的西營盤皇后大道西「雀仔橋」，1989年。
年的一場大火，就是由威靈頓街焚燒至這一帶。被稱為「雀
仔橋」的堤道，築於開埠初期，供市民前往圓家醫院就診。堤道底
下有一所築建於1911年的地下公廁，約於千禧年後才停用。圖左於l
年時仍為海段，新填地上曾依次築建貨倉、戲院及華人樓宇。
迄至1970年代，這一帶為「故衣」中心，現時左方碩果僅存的合德
故衣行仍在營業。

香港第一次填海，是在港島一條海旁小徑
對開，一大段海邊斜坡旁開展。該小徑於
1

年闢成皇后大道，而中區的沿海新道路，則名
為海旁中、海旁中街或寶靈海旁中。到了
1

年代中易名德輔道中。
開埠初期，位於海旁中的著名建築有顛地
洋行及域厘行，所在現為置地廣場及滙豐銀行，
還有第一代大會堂、中環街市及其西鄰的鐵行
輪船公司大樓。
當時，由皇后大道中通往海旁中的主要道
路，為畢打街及砵典乍街。到了

7年再闢
成位於中環街市兩旁的域多利皇后街和租庇利
街。中環街市亦同時重建，第三代中環街市落
成於
1895年，為這一帶的新地標。
中環街市以西，有包括興隆街、同文街丶
永安街及機利文街等多條早期為「私家街」的橫
街，內外有不少貨倉、機器工場、經營船具和
雜貨等的店舖，到了二十世紀才逐漸轉營他業。
整條海旁中，除畢打和雪廠等碼頭外，亦
有多座屬於各沿海商行私自興建的碼頭。

後，新闢了一條以填海主催者遮打爵士

開，再經歷往後的多次中上環填海後，千諾道
中的沿海地位逐漸被其他新道路取代。

The firsl re clamation projecl underlaken
by the aulhorities began with a small palh along
Lhc northern coaslline or Lhe prescnl-day Ccnlral
Dislrict.
In 1842, Lhis palh became known as Queen's
Road which served as Cenlral's (Vicloria Cily) new
main slreel. This slrelch ol' road was also called
Praya Cenlral, Praya Cenlral Slreel or Bowring
Praya Cenlral. In 1890, Lhe road became known as
Des Voeux Road Cenlral.
In Lhe early days of the lerrilory, well-known
buildings along the Praya Cenlral were Oenl &
Co. and \Vardley House near Lhe presenl-day
Hong Kong Landmark and Lhe I !SBC Building.
There were also lhe firsl generation of "Cily I !all",
the Central 1Iarket and lhe P&O I leadquarters
Building (Peninsula and Orient Steam Navigation
Company). Pedder Slreel and Pottinger Slreel
were the main links belween Queen's Road Central
and Praya Central. In 1887, newly conslrucled
Queen Vicloria Slreel and Jubilee Streel bordered
"Central Market" which saw its Lhird-generation
version completed in 1895 and soon became the
area's new landmark. The rebuilt market was a
three-storey Victorian-style structure with a tower
in the middle.
Streets west of Central .Market included I-ling
Lung Slrccl, Tung 1-lan Slrccl, \\'ing On Slrccl
and Gilman Street, and various neighbouring
lanes and side-streets were considered as private
streets. These streets saw the rise and伽uri

of machinery and mechanical workshops, shops
dealing in shipping accessories and general goods
stores, and these establishments carried out their
businesses as such until the early 20th cenlury
、;vhen
other trades and businesses took over.
Apa rl from the Pe dder Pier and Lhe Ice
House Slreel Pier, lhere exisled quite a number
of privalely-buill piers serving mainly shipping
eslablishmenls along Praya Cenlral.
After the completion of Lhe vasl reclamation
projects in Cenlral and \Veslern Dislricl in 1889,
Chaler Road was conslrucled in honour of Sir
Paul Chaler, Lhe mastermind behind Lhe major
reclamalions in Central and Vic loria Harbour.
AL Lhe cenlre of Chaler Road, Lhere slood a
slalue of Queen Victoria enlhroned beneath a
domed cupola. The slalue was commissioned Lo
commemorate her Diamond Jubilee in 1897 and
