8 THE LOST CONNECTION
BET WEEN PEOPLE AND
THE WATERFRONT
Under the continuous waves of
reclamation, North Point has undergone
massive geographical transformation.
Its association with the coast has also
been in constant change.
L arge-scale recl amation star ted in
North Point in the 1890s, in which Royal
Dutch Petroleum Company (cur rent
Royal Dutch Shell Group) set up storage,
distribution depot and terminal pier at
the intersection of Electric Road and Oil

Electric Company was granted land by
the government to construct a power

reclaimed land where the residential,

Compared to the east and the west,
namely Quarr y Bay Park and Victoria
Park, North Point lacks harbourfront
open space for the public’s enjoyment.
The large-scale parks in North Point are
Tin Hau Temple Road Garden and Choi
Sai Woo Park, which are quite remote
to the residents of central North Point.
While King’s Road Playground is in a
relatively accessible location, the limited
space provides little room for leisure
and activities.

nowadays, Nor th Point used to be a

public realm at ease and without
restriction. From the perspective of Mr.

1960s, streets were the places where he
could meet and have fun with friends.
Among all, North Point Estate was the
favourite go-to for him and his friends.
