"The specific internal party background to Mao's
rise in the Chinese Communist movement has
until recently been obscured by the unavailability
of reliable Chinese and Comintern data on the
years between the 1927 massacre and the rise of
the rural - based Communist insurgent movement
in 1932. Chinese and Soviet attempts to legitimize
the origins of their respective positions in their
current dispute prompted both sides to unearth
hitherto suppressed documents on those crucial
years of Sino - Soviet relations . Thornton's skillful
use of these new documents , supplemented by a
number of interviews with former Chinese activists ,
has resulted in the startling (at least for those not
intimately familiar with Chinese party history)
conclusion that the tactics of protracted guerrilla
warfare and the shift from the cities to the country
side was not Mao's but the Comintern's idea, hence
the notorious ' Li Li - san line ' was an indigenous
Chinese leftist deviation from the Comintern's and
not from Mao's line . The latter simply took
advantage of Li's folly of pressing for an urban
centered movement in China and with the Comintern's
indirect help defeated Li and subsequently declared
his and his party's independence from the Russians
and the Comintern . It is an important book that
students of Chinese politics should fine invaluable
in searching for valid precedents on the origins of
the Sino - Soviet Conflict. Index. ?? CHOICE Dec 69

" This work offers one of the best recipe sections
ever assembled . The instructions are a model of

clarity and follow Wallace Hong's style of
listing the ingredients alphabetically . Each

recipe provides the English and the Chinese name ,
the source of the dish, and information on whether
or not it is approved for such special diets as ulcer
or diabetic . There is a wide range of recipes ;
for example , there are 23 different recipes for
spare ribs . Unlike Hong's CHINESE COOK BOOK
which only covers Cantonese cooking, MRS. MA'S
CHINESE COOKBOOK, on Northern Chinese
Cuisine , or Lem and Morris ' , THE HONG KONG
COOKBOOK, the present book draws from all
sections of the country ; and the recipes are excel
lent. As an added bonus , a unique section not
only describes but numerically ranks Chinese
ingredients as to their importance and expense .
However, in my opinion the book is not encyclope
dic in scope . Beyond the recipes and a descrip
tion of ingredients , an encyclopedia should at least

33
contain a section on gastronomy, instructions
on how to bone , shell, and slice various ingre
dients , table settings (preferably in color) ,
utensils and serving dishes , and a history of the
development of Chinese cuisine . Nonetheless ,

what is covered in this book is brilliantly done .
It is an outstanding book of recipes and deserves
a place in many libraries and Chinese cookbook

overly simplified political perspective . In fact,
authoritarian and dictorial aspects of Maoism
receive little comment. The authors are willing

" Mao's Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution was
a failure . His Red Guards failed. Historians ,

Sinologists , and armchair China watchers may
find value in this chatty, personal, involuted , but
documented report on the machinations of the
inner circle of the Chinese Communist party
before , during, and after the Red Guard upheaval .
The problem of all microhistory lies in its over
sharp focus which may tend to obscure some of the
macrohistoric realities . In spite of this inherent
problem, Elegant details the crosscurrents that led
to the Red Guard uprisings and to the crushing

40
of that Mao - inspired movement. He relates
how, ultimately, the army reestablished some
degree of effective rule while Mao was relegated
to a weakened , almost figurehead, position .
The new leaders , the generals , had to make the
broken nation function again . China today under
the generals has become a federation of semi
autonomous areas whose communist - militarist
leaders are only to a degree obeisant to the
control of the central government. Production
of commodities and services is improving , and in
time the shadow junta may promote one of its
own to the chairmanship . Elegant's rendition of
the story is recommended for college history

Praeger 1970 320p biblio $ 10.00
69-15748

' In the past decade observers of the Chinese
scene have repeatedly been bewildered by the
convulsions in the Chinese Communist party .
Bitter disputes with Soviet Russia as well as war
fare within the national party, culminating in the
9
'great proletarian revolution, have kept the
specialists busy in search of explanations . The
present study should have a decisive effect on
work in this field . Hsiung delves deep below
the surface of the power struggles between Mao
and his ideological foes and pinpoints many of the
vital issues . In his view, the confrontations

were not mere tactical maneuvers ; nor has Mao's

41
quest been solely an effort to enlarge the
dimensions of Communist ideology, but
rather a search for ideas attuned to Chinese
needs . This volume , proposing answers for
many perplexing questions , raises at the
same time numerous problems concerning
the relevancy of Chinese Communist thought
for revolutionaries elsewhere . For anyone
seeking understanding of the ideological
challenges arising within Communism in
general and within Chinese Comminism in
particular Hsiung's study is surely indispens
able . " LJ 1 Jan 71

Praeger 1970 308p biblio $10.00
70-114345

" In the Maoist development strategy , which
stresses the transformation of people's attitudes
and motives , the educational system is
obviously a key element . Price who taught
English in Peking from 1965 to 1967 , has
written a survey of Chinese education , which
emphasizes the ways in which this approach
is carried out in China's schools . Price

concludes that the problem facing China is
how to produce technically skilled people who
have neither the traditional contempt of
Chinese intellectuals toward physical labor nor
the special consumption privileges common in
other industrialized , modern societies . Price
argues that the Chinese policies of self- criti
cism and of radical curriculum reform which
discards humanistic and nonapplied science
courses , and the continuing requirement to
engage in productive labor , have yet to prove
their value . Included are descriptions of the
historical background of Chinese education , the
present organization and control of the schools ,
and a special section on teacher training . In
several instances , Price has been forced to
generalize on the basis of spotty monographic
studies ; but his survey is valuable in that it was
written after the Great Proletarian Cultural
Revolution (1966-1968 ) , which had a major
impact on education, and is drawn from personal
experience . Price's views are a welcome

change from the useful, but bloodless , intelligent
manpower estimates produced by Leo A. Orleans
and other U. S. government experts when writing
about education in China . " LJ 1 Sep 70

of the spread of mechanized farming upon daily

and general business efficiency OMERCATIONis less than a
striking success ; but, as Wheelwright points out,
the Maoists have programmed in so many non
economic factors that these too must be weighed
before a reasoned judgment can be made about the
success or failure of the Cultural Revolution . This
well-written study shows that once before the hyper
ethnocentric Chinese rejected and scorned the
technology of the Western foreign devils , and that
China consequently suffered a century of indignity at
the hands of Europeans and then of the Japanese .
The Chinese dilemma, in altered perspective , re
mains . Shall the priority be social or economic
change ? Shall the priority be the new Communist
man or the production of things ? The alternative
costs are known to the Chinese leaders . They have
chosen to recast man , and the production of things
will have a secondary place . However, they are
allocating sufficient resources for defense and
capital growth to insure survival as a political
entity . Wheelwright has produced an objective ,
competent assessment in an area which has had
insufficient coverage . Recommended for compara

tive political economy collections . " LJ 1 Feb 71

"This monograph @ 0 • is mainly an attempt to
construct an index of industrial production for
China in the 1912-49 period . Chang claims that
his effort issuperior to Fred Hung's ' Rates and
Patterns of Industrial Growth in Modern China'
because of a more inclusive set of compo
nent series used and better weighting techniques .
. . . he finds that the pre - 1949 rate of growth
was high in all periods except those of war disrup
tion . Since the index used was a laspeyres type ,
the 1933 base year prices tend to impart an up
ward basis to an index of an industrializing
economy. When this type of index was used by
Soviet planners for the post- 1927 period , it was
criticized by Western economists as inflating
claimed growth rates . It appears important for
'objective ' Western observers to demonstrate that
Russia and China had a high growth rate in their
pre - socialistic periods . This work will find its
most appreciative audiences among specialized
graduate students and the backroom boys of the
