The 1868 map of Xinan district drawn by Father Simeone Volonteri was from Xinan xianzhi (Gazette of Xinan District), Jiaqing 24 (1819).
Wang Chongxi, Xinan xianzhi (Gazette of Xinan District), Jiaqing 24 (1819), Hong Kong, 1979 reprint. Such an assertion is apparently wrong. Many erroneous assertions have been made with regard to the origin of the name Sha Tin. I wrote an article, "Shatian gudao xun xiangmu (In Search of Scented Wood Along Sha Tin's Ancient Route)", which appeared in the June 2000 issue of Ming Pao Monthly. One of the para- graphs in the article incorrectly explained the origin of the name Sha Tin. This paragraph was inserted by the editor without my consent. I only discovered this unauthorised insertion after publication. Other ar- ticles that have made erroneous claims on the origin of the term Sha Tin include: Shatian lishi zhanlan tekan (Special Issue on the Sha Tin History Exhibition), Hong Kong, Shatian lishi zhanlan ji tekan chuban gongzuo xiaozu, 1987, p. 7; Shatian gujin fengmao bianji weiyuanhui, Shatian gujin fengmao, (Scenes of Sha Tin - Now and Then), Hong Kong, Sha Tin District Board, 1997, p. 8.
