THE COMMITTEE considered:-

(i) A telegram from C.-in-C. India to the Chiefs of Staff reporting that a full appreciation

· on the India situation was being sent by fast air mail, and recommending that,in the meanwhile, a decision should be taken to despatch the 6th Brigade of the 2nd British Divisional to Hong Kong as further delay would cause dislocation and diversion of shipping arrangements;

(ii) a telegram

from Army H.Q. India to S.A.C.S.E.A. stating that, in view of the situation in India, it had been considered necessary to retain in India the divisional` troops of

the 2nd British Division, the 25th Dragoons and 146th Regiment, R.A.C. (less one squadron already sailed).

SIR ARCHIBALD NYE said that as a result of an exchange of private telegrams with General Swayne, he was prepared to agree to the despatch of the Brigade of the 2nd British Division to Hong Kong. Before, however, agreeing to the retention of the other formations mentioned in paragraph 1 of India's second telegram, it would be as well to obtain a report on the effect of this action from Admiral Mountbatten.

THE COMMITTEE:

Approved the immediate despatch

of the Brigade of the 2nd British Division to Hong Kong, and instructed the Secretary to draft and despatch a telegram to Admiral Mountbatten and C.-in-C. India in the above sense.
