Mr. Jones Parry wrote to Mr. McEuen on 20th September asking him to advise him on the possibility of obtaining any foodstuffs from China for Borneo and Hong Kong during the period of military responsibility in these territories. You received a copy of his

letter of 24th September in reply, stating that he could not advise us about ways and means of getting anything out of China at the moment. I see, however, from cable 1160 of the 23rd September, from H. 1399186/10

H.M.-F399 Ambassador at Chungking to the Foreign Cffice, which indicates that it may now be easier to send more British representatives to China, and that the re- opening of important consular posts is being proposed to the Chinese Government. In these circumstances, I wonder whether specific enquiries could not be made about surpluses of oilseeds and fats, to the Commercial Counellor or to any consular offices who have returned to their posts. The particular commodities concerned

are:

For BORNEO

Groundnuts

280 tons 100

Lard Bean Oil

300

For HONG KONG

Groundnuts

Oil Seed Fats
