2. I am quite sure Chinese accept our position at Hong Kong and do not expect us to weaken.

The Generalissimo undoubtedly thinks that we have taken advantage of our position under the Americans in order to force our way into Shanghai without asking permission.

4. In talking with Madame Chiang about Japaneso operations I endeavoured to make clear how necessary co-ordinated control was until situation was cleared up, which she seemed to understand.

The British Ambassador assumed, I think correctly, that Americans would be reporting our movements which as far as I can discover did not happen.
