Such a promise would go a long way to nullifying any potential ill feeling amongst the men in India or amongst the relatives in the United Kingdom which might be aroused by failing to get them to understand the reasons for delay.
THE FRIME MINISTER summing up the discussion,
asked the Chiefs of Staff to complete their shipping review as a matter of the utmost urgency and urge the Americans to bring forward the date due for the discussions on the world wide shipping review.
THE COMMITTEE:
(a) Invited the Chiefs of Staff to complete
their shipping review and to submit
it to the Defence Committee as a matter of the utmost urgency;
(b) Invited the Chiefs of Staff to approach
the American Chiefs of Staff with a view to bringing forward the date of the discussions on shipping previously settled at Potsdam as 1st October, 1945;
(c) Invited the Ministry of War Transport,
in consultation with the Secretary of State for India, to examine the allocations to civilians due for return to the United Kingdom, and whether or not the return of certain
classes of civilian could be postponed until the beginning of 1946;
(a) Took note that the Admiralty and the Air
Ministry would do everything possible to assist in the moving of personnel to the ports of India;
(e) Took note that the Air Ministry were
examining what increase could be made to the air trooping lift from India to the United Kingdom.
