conclusively Tamaka over in Hongkong would be the same so it was no use going there. He said he had seen leaflet but that General Wedemeyer was a little previous and that we should return to our base (it should be remembered that I was not even on any of the discussions so that this report of the negotiations is at best second hand) the General then almost immediately changed his mind and said we would (? have) to stay as guests of the Japanese Imperial Government until Armistice was signed and was immediately communicated to fighter cover for on ward despatch. Attitude Japanese General was reported very friendly but that of Junior Officers and other ranks was as arrogant and menacing as ever (as seen by me). The south China expeditionary force is by no means a

defeated army.

Para 3. American officers had a meeting and decided to

accept hospitality of Japanese. I was later asked

for my views and on stating them emphatically was asked whether I had consulted my officers or whether these were

Surprise obvious. My summing up my personal views. was that as Japanese Commander had refused permission for us to carry out General Wedemeyer's orders there was nothing to be gained and much to lose by remaining. I felt sure that incidents or excuses would prompt Japanese to change their attitude.
