ISMAY from CARTON DE WIART.

15th August 1945.

General Ho Hao Jo, Head of Foreign Affairs Bureau, recently came to see me and told me that subject of Hong Kong had been mentioned in election speeches in U.K. I told him I know nothing of this but I told him I knew feeling at home was that we should retain Hong Kong. He then told me that Chinese would make no diffi- culties.

2.

My Staff Officer has just telegraphed to me that Wedemeyer today, 15th August, gave sanction as from 1415 I do not hours 15th August to the Hong Kong operation. know what this operation is but have instructed Colonel Chapman Walker to telegraph details direct to you.

3.

S.A.C. has informed me that British Pacific Fleet with Australian contingent is proceeding direct to Hong Kong.

I strongly urge that the Generalissimo should be informed of this through the Ambassador without delay to avoid these operations clashing with Wedomcyor's and to ensure Chinese goodwill towards our operation.
