Copy of a Minute dated 14th August, 1945, from the Saccretary, Chiefs of Staff Committee to Foreign Office
With reference to the American reply (contained in JSM 1) to our proposal for taking the surrondor of Japanesc forces at Hong Kong, I attach a copy of the signal which the Chiefs of Staff are sonding.
The Chiefs of Staff propose to order the move of this naval force as soon as the Japanese surrender is accepted.
They think that there should be no question of consultation with the Chinese about the reoccupation of a British possession, but that the Chinese Government should moroly be informed of what we are doing a fow hours before our forces are duc at Hong Kong,
