There is no doubt, though we do not know here what it is.
I think, that the Chinese after the war will do everything they can to get rid of the remaining foreign colonies on the coast, and it is also within their powers, when they think the proper time has come, to make Hong Kong's position very difficult. If the idea is to produce some scheme to make our presence at Hong Kong more acceptable to the Chinese, it would be advisable to have it ready for discussion with the Chinese at whatever time seems to us appropriate - the question is not actual at present, but things may perhaps move fast later. The purpose of this letter is however mainly to remind you that all we know officially here is the statement in the House of Commons of November 8th. Any guidance you can give us would be much appreciated.
