CONFIDENTIAL
I am writing with reference to your su letter to Ashley Clarke of the Foreign Office
55104/2/43 of the 27th August, of which you sent a copy to Cribbett, suggesting an inter- departmental meeting to consider the possible claims which may be made upon His Majesty's Government in respect of Hong Kong, and whether any, and if so what, alternative positions would be practicable for us in the event of our being unable to maintain the position that there should be no change in the status of the Colony and the New Territories.
From the point of view of our civil aviation interests, the position is that, subject to any post-war international arrangements that may be made we shall wish to ensure that we enjoy national rights in the use of any airfields in the Colony or the leased territory, if any change is made in their status. We shall, of course, be ready to send a representative to the meeting, if one is held.
You will, of course, appreciate
J.J. Paskin, Esq., M.C.,
Colonial Office.
