EXTRACT from letter:-

"From Teddie's letter dated Feb 18th, which reached here on July 7th sent by the Swiss Conmil, Hr. Joerg, through his busi- ress office in Geneva,

"By staying here after you left, and more still by being here after 8th Dec., I have undoubtedly been able to help the foreign staff of the K.L.A, as you will learn from the very full diary I have kept from Dec.8th on, when one day you will be able to read 16. It is too long a story to tell in a letter and it is sufficient for the moment to tell you that KoL. A ̧ ́affairs are conducted as before with the exception tha we are now under military control, which is exercised through a supervisary staff of Japanese businessmen moat of them em- ployees of the North China Development Co., but that all K.L.A staff (foreign and Chinese) retain exactly the same positions as they did previously with the sole exception of myself as I refused the "offer" to continue as Chief Manager made to me by the Japanese Military authorities on Dec. 8th and after more than a month's negotiation was on Jan.10th ordered to assume the post of "Chlef Advisor" and carry on, my dutics exactly as before. The supervision to which we are subjected is by no means excessive nor, so far, unpleasant or unreasonable and the Chief Supervisor is an extremely intelligent man with sufficient influence in military circles to get bis opinions respected. I have visited the Mines' and C.W.too and found every thing as usual everywhere and it is impossible to realise that the British and Belgian. staff there (or for that matter here in Tientsin also) are, especially at least, civilian prisoners of war, Beth there and here there has been no in- terference with our daily lives or living conditions and the Mines and C.W. too are this much better off than we are in Tientsin in that all their Clubs are functioning as usual, whereas here the Tientsin Club is closed, the Race Club and Country Club taken over and the latter is now run as an "international" club for Axia nationals and sympathisers only, while we are confined, withia the limits of the British.
