for some to become adjusted to the change, especially when young

children and babies entered into the picture. Schedules were up-

set, both in diet and rest, with the result that children were

tired and cross, and this naturally reacted upon the dispositions

of the mothers. However, as soon as the first hardships were

passed, there was the settling down process, and most of the women

took a happier outlook on life. There were numerous centers where

the women had such good personal care and food that when a change

was suggested to smaller quarters they refused to move. There

were many grateful expressions and letters of appreciation towards

the Red Cross, Army officials, and volunteers who were of great

help during this emergency. These completely blotted out what

little natural and excusable grumbling there was at the beginning.
