Your telegram No. 598. Between June 30th and August 3rd following numbers of women and children were compulsorily evacuated under Government scheme July 1st Military and Naval families

August 3rd further civilian families 55 persons. Total to August 3rd 3,474 persons. Many others left the colony under their own arrangements.

2. In the above period exemptions from evacuation are granted to 499 women of whom 262 were nurses or A.R.P. workers (who omitted) presumably will remain if the Colony is subjected to (corrupt group) or attack and 237 were exempt for business reasons and will presumably have to evacuate eventually if attack appears imminent.

3. At the beginning of October cases of women and children sho were in the Colony without exemption from evacuation or whose temporary exemption had expired were considered and as a result some

of 161 persons will be required to leave in the next few weeks.

At the same time these about 110 will require Government passages. exemptions are granted to 42 persons not included in second paragraph above.

440 A reconsideration of all exemptions granted under second paragraph above will shortly be undertaken.

5. G.0.0. advises no relaxation of original scheme and that procedure contemplated under paragraphs (3) and (4) should be expedited.
