Governor of Hong Kong has only ascertained

from civilian evacuees how much they are prepared to pay for

accomodation and whether Brisbane Sydney or Melbourne was

preferred. The rates quoted by commonwealth Government for

accommodation and food were 30-50 shillings (Australian) per

adult per week and 20-30 shillings per child. Considered these

prices were beyond means of average soldiers family and

informed Governor that we assumed all arrangements for

reception in Australia would be made by War Offide, see last

sentence of 7484 of 13 July. Do not consider that families

can be sent to Australia and there left to find their

accommodation and live on allotments made as in U.K. but

suggest they should be kept in groups according to husbands unit. In view of proposed charges for accomodation feel that the

only solution is for you to make direct arrangements with

Australia as to how much W.D. are prepared to pay for

accomodation and feeding for each class of soldiers family

e.g. officers, warrant officers and others informing us as to what stoppages should be correspondingly effected.
