Withdrawal of gunboats from the Yangtse.

Copy telegram No.336 (0237/3) from Commander in Chief China, stating that he considers appointment of R.A. Yangtse could be relinquished when three gunboats are withdrawn to HongKong, date of which will depend on easing of North East monsoon, probably about February, 1940. Further report as to administration of remaining gunboats will be made later, Agrees gunboats above Hankow can be reduced and suggests H.M.S. "Sandpiper" and H.M.S "Gannet" be laid up. H.M.S. "Falcon" to remain in cormission and make occasional moves from Chungking to Ichang.
