I have another letter from Hongkong written on the
13th October and give you the political bits.
"Political letters of the sort I think you ask for in your letter of the 28th September are, to my mind, worthless. As you know you get a rumour and it may or may not be true and I cannot believe that the rumours we hear here are really worth passing on. Should I fall on any really interesting news I will of course send it on to you.
"At the beginning of the war the Government here were very scared that the Japanese were going to march in over the frontier - so much so that Hughes and Potters considered it advisable to vacate their houses at Fanling. I am afriad
That scare I took no such steps as far as ours was concerned. has now died down and another fear seems to be taking its place, which is that when and if the Wang Ching Wei Puppet Government gets into its stride they might, urged on by Japan perhaps even with the aid of Japanese troops - contemplate another sally over the border. Personally I think this very far fetched.
*There is perhaps one piece of political dope that is more than rumour. T. V. has just returned from Chungking where I am told he was very amiably received by the Generalissimo His star is on the ascendant while Kung's is on the wane and I am told there is a distinct possibility of T. V. superseding H. H. Morrison, in one of his notes, refers to the possibility of an American loan to China to the extent of C. dollars three hundred million. I think this should be U.S. dollars and my information is that this rumour has been put out by H. H. himself. I do not think there is any likelihood of this coming off and it is merely another example of Kung's tactics.
