Below Barrier.

No trade moves and only a small number of passengers in Hsingkong area. Good cargoes in Haimen district from

Chinese occupied ports but Customs are refusing clearance to all ships for Haimen and Chitung after 1st June on account of Japanese military operations.

Nanking. Guerillas are active around the city and even reputed to have pillaged shops inside south gate, Japanese obviously perturbed.

Wuhu no change. Trade in British goods continues. Kiukiang no change. Large numbers of wounded

arriving by road and shipped down river. Frequent troop movements up and down river probably to HUKAU (Hukow). First couple (German) returned to their houses at Kuling.

Hankow. Little change. Field Marshal

Prince Hashikonoto spent a few days here inspecting and

addressing troops.
