Weekly Yangtse situation report number two 1939.

Situation unchanged. Trade continues, etc.

Japanese are now carrying cargoes from Hsupukou. Above

Kiangyin Japanese trade at Kuan as well as other small ports.

Nanking. Demonstration to celebrate first anniversary

of Nanking provisional government due today Tuesday has been

postponed. Anti-British propaganda subsiding.

Wuhu. Guerillas active and firing can be heard.

N.K.K.

(Corrupt group) Chinese compradore has been arrested by

Japanese. It is thought that reason is aiding transport of

British goods. See last report.

Kiukiang situation unchanged. Hankow slow but

definite improvement in conditions generally. "ealthy Chinese

are leaving French concession on boundary of which Japanese

restrictions have practically ceased. Many Japanese

civilians of both sexes arriving and Japanese import and export

trade steadily increasing.
