No. 998.

(F 3776/2882/10).

OUT FILE

FOREIGN OFFICE, S.W.1.

24th April, 1939.

25

Sir,

I observe from Your Excellency's despatch No. 473

(7/72/G/39) Secret, of the 18th April, that the French

Government have no very definite plan in mind as regards

the joint representations which they tentatively suggested

might be made by His Majesty's Ambassador at Washington,

in company with his French colleague, on the subject of

the proposals recently put forward by the Chinese for

joint action and consultation in the Far East. While

the ideas of the French Government on this subject remain

in their present somewhat nebulous state, I do not feel

disposed to issue any instructions to Sir Ronald Lindsay,

and unless you see grave objection, I propose to do

nothing further in the matter, unless and until the

Quai d'Orsay come forward with some rather more definite

suggestion.

2. I am sending copies of this despatch to His Majesty's Representatives at Washington, Shanghai and Tokyo.

I am, with great truth and respect,

Sir,

Your Excellency's obedient Servant,

(For the Secretary of State)

(Sa.) N. B. RONALD.

His Excellency

The Right Honourable

Sir Eric Phipps, G.C.M.G., C.V.O.,

etc.,

etc.,

Paris.

etc.,
