KNITTING INDUSTRY.

During the past two months, factories have reported business to be rather quiet al though, for wellknown "chops", business with Singapore has been well maintained. There is still evi dence, however, of intense competition from Shanghai in the lower grade qualities. The demand from Siam, Java and Manila is extremely quiet, al though to some extent this is seasonal and dealers are looking forward to more trade enquiri es towards the end of August or early September.

During the past few months an appreciable quantity of locally manu- factured knit ted goods had been finding its way into China via Swato w. The extension of Sino-Japanese hostilities to Swatow has put a stop to this trade, but there is always the possibility of other means of entry into China being developed.

Demand from Empire markets has fallen off somewhat during the past two months and although new enquiries have recently been received it is probable that the extent of business which may materialise will depend to a large extent on developments in regard to the intemational situation.

TIN.

Approximately 150 tons of tin was refined in local refinieries during the past week.
