SHIPPING.
The market continues quiet. Practically nothing doing in the Saigon or Bangkok trades. Fixtures reported this week:
steamer for full cargo of salt, Taisami Bay/Macao; steamer for full cargo of coal, Calc ut ta/Hong Kong.
The demand from North China ports to Shanghai and to Hong Kong is fair The Shanghai market is dull in both directions. Recent reports indicated the Japanese intended intensifying the blockade of China ports as from 1st June, 1939, and to en- force this they had instructed the Shanghai Customs to refuse clearance by steamers; this threat was later modified to apply to Yangtsze Delta Forts but so far no confirmation has be en received. The agreement reported last week oo vering the transport of cargo to and from Foo chow to foreign tonnage at Sharp Peak has now been repudiated by the Japanese, with the result that Foo- chow is now practically a closed port.
In spite of continued Japane se attention, cargo continues to offer in fair quantity from Swatow.
The demand from Hong Kong is slightly better. Good cargoes from Pakho1, but Hoihow remains closed to foreign shipping.
The Press report the Japanese have repudiated the agreement whereby a British River vessel can operate fortnightly to Canton, alleging recent sailings have accepted cargo etc., contrary to the agreement. Traffic is suspended for the present, pending negotiation. The port generally remains alosed to foreign trading though Japanese steamers operate regular services. The N.K.K. s.s. "Huashan Maru" arrived Canton 31/5 discharged 18956 packages flour, etc., all from North China ports, and sailed 1/6/39 after loading 20,000 baga sugar and securing a large number of passengers.
