Early this morning Japanese troops and aircraft appeared on (?western) section of frontier. No firing or bombing reported and no incidents. One battalion believed to be in Shum-Chun Area and other troops westward. Have established military posts on frontier with 2 companies of Infantry. Remainder of 2 battalions standing by. Contact has been established with Japanese at Shum-Chun railway bridge. Battalion Adjutant stated that all Japanese troops had strict orders to respect our frontier which is known to them. No indication of how long Japanese troops will remain. Object of operations probably partly against guerillas partly closing

communications with China.
