This Order brought into force by Proclamation of Governor dated 1st July 1881, to which there are tables attached.

1. Showing the amount to be paid in the new cur- rency for sums assessed by Her Majesty in British money; and

2. Showing the amount to be paid and received in the now currency for sums assessed in the denominations of Spanish currency hitherto in use in Gibraltar. Amount of coin in circulation not known. No paper currency.

MALTA.

Order in Council, 13 August 1855. Proclaimed 4 Octo- ber 1855. Revoking so much of two Orders in Council of 13 November 1850 as regulates the rates at which certain foreign coins should pass current, and declaring that it is expedient that the gold and silver coins of this realm should be the sole legal tender at the rates, and subject to the limitation specified in the first-mentioned Order.

Amount of coin in circulation about 1,000,000l. storling.

The paper currency consists of notes of two banks, established in Commandite, not exceeding in all 54,000%, of which about 50,000l. were in circulation on 31 December 1880.

The amount of British paper currency is very trifling. The accounts are kept by Government in sterling, and by the commercial community in Maltese currency.

Order in Council, 30 June 1852. (see Gambia), and the Proclamation published by virtue thereof of 6 Septem- ber 1852. Government notice, dated 15 January 1862, whereby Spanish coins marked 20 reales and bearing

date 1858 were prohibited from being received into the Colonial chest.

Order in Council, 10 November 1866. Making gold coins of Sydney Mint a legal tender, and the Proclama- tion published on the 12th of January 1867.

Order in Council, 14 January 1871. For giving cur- rency to gold coins made at Sydney Mint of like designs as those approved for the United Kingdom, and the Proclamation published the 1st of August 1871.

Order in Council, 28 November 1874 (see also Gambia). Providing that the Belgian, Italian, and Swiss silver five-franc piece, of legal weights and fineness equal to French five-franc pieces, shall pass current at the rate of 38. 10 d. Proclamation published the 5th January 1875.

Order in Council, 24 March 1876, and the Proclamation published on the 4th January 1877, withdrawing copper coins from circulation.

Ordinance No. 2 of 1880. Declaring the Spanish, Mexican, and South American silver dollar not a legal tender.

British coins are in circulation, and the following gold and silver foreign coins at the under-mentioned rates:-
