-(233)

Thank you for good news contained in your signal 24223 (M02) of

C in C in Australia but know how pleased he will be.

Second.

A.

HE has today signalled Colonial Office on following lines.

He is now dealing with lands questions and additional units as

entirely distinct matters that they are and must be and hopes Colonial Office will

do same treating question additional units with urgency it demands.

B.

Expresses regret not possible get one unit here earlier as requested

and while agreeing Loyals is helpful indeed stresses that there is not a close season

for trouble here and that there is a standing need for the units now.

Third. Have recently concluded an internal security exercise with police

and this proved once again how very thin we are on the ground and how essential

are these extra units.

Fourth. I am extremely grateful for help War Office is giving in this matter

as is HE. also and I trust I shall not be misunderstood if I express a hope that

if a decision could be reached sometime before the end May it might still be

possible to move the first unit on 20 July. Appreciate that if very early

decision not possible then arrival early October is best,
