I must say that (149) (49) on this file the Chinese have got us in an extraordinary position in Hong Kong where, for fear of provoking them, we must refrain from taking the prudent measures of self-defence which our resource has provided for us. Bending over too far backwards, as someone said once (Emerson, I think!), is as bad as falling flat on your face!
But we have already let it be known that H.M.ships will be equipped with nuclear weapons and as long as the Chinese have taken that in, they should be debarred from aggression until they themselves get them and then nuclear stalemate obtains.
