THE MILITARY THREAT TO HONG KONG UP TO 1960

Note by the Secretary

At their meeting on THURSDAY, 12TH JULY, 1956 the Chiefs of Staff approved the above-quoted report by the Joint Intelligence Committee, subject to the following

amendments:-

(i) Page 1, Paragraph 2, 2nd Sentence

(ii)

Delete all after "depend upon" and insert:- "timely American use of American weapons by the United States Navy, or the prior supply of United States weapons to British land and air forces in Hong Kong, or both."

Page 1, Paragraph 5(a) 2nd Sentence

Delete "before the arrival of reinforcements" and insert:- "with ease.

(iii) Page 2, Paragraph 5(a)

First sentence. After "Naval" insert " Second sentence. Delete in toto.

THE COMMITTEE had before them a report by the Joint

Intelligence Committee on the military threat to Hong Kong

and the extent to which the attack might be reduced by nuclear counter action.

In discussion THE COMMITTEE agreed the following

amendments:-

(i) Page 1, Paragraph 2, Second Sentence

Delete all after "depend upon" and insert:- "timely American use of American weapons by the United States Navy, or the prior supply of United States weapons to British land and air forces in Hong Kong, or both".

(ii) Page 1, Paragraph 5(a), Second Sentence

Delete "before the arrival of reinforcements" and insert:- "with ease"
