Contributions to the Relief Fund continued to be received until just before Christmas, the final total amounting to nearly $227,000. Many individuals as well as associations, firms and organisations contributed to this generous expression of the widespread interest and sympathy which the disaster had aroused throughout the community. During the period of immediate relief this fund was kept to a great extent intact, since the Government bore the cost of the issue of meals whilst the Kowloon City Kaifong Association paid from their own funds all the overhead expenses which their work involved. At the end of December a Committee had been appointed to administer this fund and it was proposed to offer every fire victim the alternatives of receiving his share either in cash or in the form of building materials to assist him in resettling on a new site.
