Indignation over Hongkong "Persecutions".

The

SUPPORT FOR CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY STATEMENT. Chinese home service reported from Canton that during the past few days many "patriotic" Chinese in Hongkong had written to the (local) 'Ta Kung Pao' and 'wen Hui Pao' to support the statement issued on 25th January by the Chinese Foreign Ministry protesting against "persecution" of Chinese in Hongkong. Various workers' organisations in Canton and Kwangtung had arranged a meeting of delegates on 3rd February to support this statement (Peking 12.00, 6.2.52): On the following day the NCNA (16.37, 7.2.52) reported that this meeting had been attended by 300 trade union delegates. Lin Chiang-yun, Chairman of the Trade Council of Kwangtung said: "The British imperialists who seized Hongkong by armed force over a century ago - have been persecuting Chinese for a long time, for which a final reckoning has not yet been made". Huang Teng-ming, representing the Canton Trade Union Council, protested against the "constant" deportations of Chinese workers' leaders from Hongkong since the foundation of the Chinese People's Republic. He described the Chinese Foreign Ministry's statement as a "vigorous warning to British imperialism to end such savage outrages". He was followed by Chang Hseng, the recently-expelled representative of the victims of the Tungtou fire, and by several deported Hongkong trade union leaders. Finally Liu Tien-hsing, member of the Kwangtung Trade Union Council, announced that donations raised in the Province to help the fire victims had reached nearly 10,000,000 people's dollars and asked the workers to continue with the donation campaign

CANTON PRESS COMMENTS The 'Nanfang Jih Pao' (Southern Daily) and the 'Lienho Pao' commented on 5th February on the Hongkong persecutions" and supported the "struggle of the Chinese com- patriots". The former paper expressed confidence that the "patriotic Chinese in Hongkong" would "achieve victory with the backing of the powerful motherland, so long as they are united in the struggle to the end". There was need for "an extensive movement to support the just struggle of our compatriots in Hongkong until the vicious schemes of Anglo-American imperialism are completely frustrated". The 'Lienho Pao' pointed out that "Hongkong is part of Chinese territory, seized by British imperialism through force. For this reason the Chinese people have full rights to live there". The Chinese people would "never tolerate or allow the Anglo-American imperialists to transform Hongkong into an outpost for the invasion of our country or a base for undermining it" (Peking 13.30, 6.2.52). This report was later featured by the NCNA (16.55, 7.2.52), which described the two papers mentioned as Canton publications.
