Gentlemen,
RELATIONS
You wrote to me on the 29th June about
certain statements which I made during my
visit to Hong Kong in January, 1964.
In saying that I, as a member of the
British Labour Party believed in the right
to self determination, I added that
Constitutional advance must be made to keep
pace with local thought and opinion and that
a Labour Government would take note of that
opinion. I also said that it was for the
people of Hong Kong to determine how and when
such advances, if any, should be made and
that the purpose of my visit was to find out
their views on the matter.
I see no inconsistency between the
opinions which I expressed and the present
policies being followed by my Rt. Hon. Friend
the Secretary of State for the Colonies.
I am sending a copy of this correspondence
to the Secretary of State for the Colonies
and to the Governor of Hong Kong.
