AIR DEFENCE OF EGYPT.

Joint Admiralty/Air Ministry/War Office Note.

The Chiefs of Staff at their 385th Meeting held on the 12th November, 1941, had under consideration a joint note by the Air Ministry and War Office on the air defence of

gkir, Egypt. They agreed that the draft signal annexed to the joint note should be despatched to the Commanders-in-Chief, Middle East.

A reply, reference 029160 dated 21st November, 1941, has now been received and reads as follows:-

"Cs-in-C. to C.O.S. In reply to C.O.S. 199. Matter under examination here. Meanwhile please despatch mission to assist. Pass to Admiralty and Air Ministry. "

The Admiralty, War Office and Air Ministry suggest that the mission should be led by an Air Officer. A suitable composition of the mission would be as follows:

1 Staff Officer to Head of Mission, and Secretary

3 Air Staff Officers (2 "Operations" and

1 Bignals")

2 General Staff Officers

(1 Colonel Grade I and

1 Grade II)

1 Naval Staff Officer

An Air Officer

To be provided by Air Ministry.

To be selected by Head of Mission.

To be selected by War Office.

To be selecred by the Admiralty.

Since the presence of the mission in the Middle East is required at an early date an air passage will be necessary.

The Chiefs of Staff are therefore requested to give their approval to the following:-

(a) The composition of the mission as defined in Para.3

above.

(b) Priority for airpassage for the mission to the

Middle Easte
