ANNEX.
General de Gaulle to General Ismay
London, 28th November, 1941.
My dear General,
Thank you for your letter of yesterday's date replying to mine of 7th October and informing me that my proposal to give the French troops in the Middle East a share in the Libyan operations has not, except as regards one bomber formation, met with His Majesty's Government's approval,
This being so I can only withdraw the totality of the proposals I had put forward regarding the participation of the French forces in the Middle East and Africa in British operations, either at the present time in Libya or eventually in Western Africa. As I explained in the note attached to my letter of 7th October these operations must, as far as Free French forces are concerned, be looked upon as a whole, on political as well as moral grounds. Nevertheless I should like to maintain my proposal for using our forces in Chad territory for an operation directed against Murzuk, and would reserve the right to launch this operation on my own initiative at an opportune moment.
May I end by wishing, in the name of the Free French forces, the best of luck to the British and Allied forces in the offensive they have now launched in Northern Africa against the common foe.
Yours very sincerely,
(Signed) C. DE GAULLE.
