exclusion of Greece in the event of an Axis drive against Greece and Turkey. He is confident that his army could hold up Italian land forces now in Albania and thus preserve our flank if he were provided with some air support and some anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons. There is however danger of effect of unopposed air bombardment both on army's morale and civilian determination.

I fully understand that the defence of Egypt must be our primary consideration and that support of Turkey is the corner-stone of our policy in the Near East. But I doubt whether warnings given by General Metaxas have been sufficiently heeded or whether the effect of eventual air bombardment of Italy from Greece has been given the importance which all our reports of conditions in Italy seem to demand. May I ask therefore that the question of air support for Greece should be once again seriously re-examined and be kept constantly under review as our own reinforcements come in?
