tests carried out under winter conditions in England. Two alternatives for carrying out these tests were

considered:

(a) A small V.L.A. section should be sent to the

Middle East for test, and no attempt made at the moment to provide the whole Alexandria defence,

(b) Establish the V.L.A. barrage and send it to the

Middle East for technical and operational tests.

Having regard to the importance of the Alexandria barrage, it was agreed to recommend that the complete barrage should be despatched to the Middle East.

5.

The Chiefs of Staff are therefore asked to approve:-

(a) That Alexandria be provided with a barrage of

30 I.E., V.L.A. balloons.

That this barrage of 30 I.E., V.L.A. balloons, together with 60 reserve balloons and the necessary personnel and equipment, be despatched to Alexandria during the fourth week of November.

(c) That a further reserve of 100 balloons be

despatched to Alexandria during the first week in January.
