ENEMY OBJECTIVES

SCALE OF ATTACK

<

the Shetlands,

Iceland.

on this country

(b) At the time of the main attack N, Scotland.

This may take the form of seaborne or airborne attack, (a) As a diversion.

(b) To occupy Ireland in order to establish air and submarine bases for attack on shipping in the Western Approaches or on our west coast ports and industries.

In the case of (b) the likely objectives will be

Airborne landings at Dublin (the seat of the Government). Simultaneously seaborne attacks in co-operation with the above, on one or more of the following:-

Londonderry

Limerick

Cork.

Some of these objectives will also apply in the case of (c).

Seaborne attack. We would not expect the equivalent of more than a division to be employed, accompanied by A.A. guns for the protection of aerodromes and a proportion of heavy guns for coast defence.

Airborne attack. Scale will be limited by the need to

conserve the maximum resources for the main attack on Great Britain. A total of 1,000 men, including a proportion of parachutists, may be employed.

REMARKS

The number of Gliders possessed by Germany is not known. Prior to the war she had no large Gliders. In Holland and Belgium she is known to have used about a dozen. They can be constructed fairly rapidly, but there is no evidence to to show how many she has got.

The I.R.A. is likely to play an important part in Iconjunction with the German organisation already in being in Eire. Seaborne attack may be carried out by German merchant ships from Germany, Scandinavia or Spain, isailing as individual ships not as an expedition. forces might also be landed from submarines and fishing craft.

This will be increased if gliders are used, see Note (c)).
