NETHERLANDS.

The 1860 List contains the following forts:

4th Class.—1. Redoubt, Fort du Bus, at Pontianak.

2. Battery, Nieuw-Brussel, at Soekadana.

3. Redoubt at Sambas.

4. Redoubt at Sintang.

5. Redoubt at Montrado.

6. Redoubt at Singkawang.

7. Redoubt at Bengkaijan.

8. Redoubt at Batoe-adjong.

Nos. 5 and 8 have been disclassed.

Pontianak and Pemanggat are first class havens.

coasters.

Singkawang and Soekadana are for

Garrison.-The garrison battalion of 620 men, distributed between Pontianak head-quarters and the forts and ports above-mentioned and one or two other posts.

Artillery.A detachment garrison between Singkawang, Sintang, and Pontianak. There is said to be an indifferent dock in the Pontianak River.

Pontianak is a Government coaling-station.

Naval Guard.-One river steamer, six guns, at Sintang; three dispatch and six armed cutters; two deficient.

The importance of this district consists in its being next neighbour to Sarawak, and commanding one shore on the Carimata Passage.

South and East Borneo.

The 1860 List has but few forts classed. Thuijll (third class, disclassed), Tatas, and Marabahan, but many (some subsequently disclassed) have been added, the names of which we do not at present know; they are in the 1866 Gazettes." The camp at Amoenthai is the most important of

these.

Garrison consists of local battalion, 1,100 men, distributed between Banjer Massin head-quarters and Martapoera, Barabei, Amoenthai, Marabahan, Kwala, Kapoeas, Pengaron, Kendangan, Tanjong, and Boentok.

Bangermassin is a first class, Sampito, a second class haven. Bangermassin is a Government coaling-station.

It is said to have an indifferent dock. This

district is important, as producing a certain amount of coals.

Naval Guard.-One river-steamer, four guns; one sea-steamer, six guns; eight armed cutters. Artillery-8th Company Fortress, Bangermassin and Amoenthai.

Celcbes Group.

Celebes Group had the following forts in the 1860 List:-

Celebes.

3rd Class.-1. Fort Rotterdam, at Makassar. 4th Class.-2. Fort Vredenburg, at Makassar.

3. Redoubt Fort Valkenburg, at Maros. 4. Redoubt Fort Carolina, at Boelecomba. 5. Redoubt at Segeri.

6. Redoubt at Bouthain.

7. Redoubt at Bima.

8. Redoubt Fort Defensie, at Saleijer.

Menado.

3rd Class.-9. Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, at Menado.

4th Class.-10. Redoubt at Gorontalo.

But 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, and 10 have since been disclassed.

Artillery.-The 20th Company Mixed Mountain and Fortress, all at Makassar.

Makassar and Menado are coaling-stations and free ports. There are many minor ports in Makassar.

The Government stud is at Melasoro, at the southern extremity of the island. Bangermassin, with Makassar, command the Straits of Makassar.
