be considered 1,000 yards wide. Melvill's Hole, 100 yards in advance, would be a good place for a firing station; another could be established on the high rocks on the Navy Peninsula.
For flanking batteries on Ordnance Point, and for preventing a landing by the Yorke Rocks, as well as for flanking the land front on the peninsula, I would place two guns of position on disappearing carriages on the projecting Gipsy Point, these to be connected by parapets and galleries with Ordnance Point.
Near Navy Point, and 300 yards from it, I would construct a battery to be directed on the channel, especially where ships must turn to force the entrance of the Narrows, as a Second line of defence.
This battery to be armed with two heavy guns in casemates, and two 8-inch howitzers, at a height of 55 feet above high-water mark.
For the land defences I propose a redoubt on Engineer Ridge and lines in front, Redoubt or fort on Engineer crossing from Yorke Bay to Whalebone Cove, to be armed with two medium guns and two guns of position en barbette. The medium guns are intended to hinder an enemy from operating behind William Islets.

Connected with Stanley Harbour and military station.
Below this lines from Fairy Cove to Watt Cove, and a small open work on Fairy Cove Hill-altitude 70 feet.
On the south side of Stanley Harbour, on the summit of Sapper's Hill, I would build an isolated fort (chiefly in masonry), and arm it with two howitzers (6-inch) and two guns of position, one gun directed on the gap at the Felton Brook (north-west), the remainder on the west, south, and east approaches.
For the defence of the Settlement and Dockyard of Port Stanley, I would construct three small redoubts, mounting two or three guns of position in each.
Also, on the bank west of the Government Office, I would have an emplacement for two guns of position.
West Redoubt, above the latter on the ridge to the west-south-west (altitude 145 feet). This would inclose the Government House, paddock, and water supply.
South Redoubt, on the high part of Murray Heights (160 feet altitude), near Martin's stone cottage.
East Redoubt, on the Murray Heights, to command the approach from the east by Hooker's Point and the Carenage, as well as by the south; also, to flank the lines which terminate in Whalebone Cove.
There should be a connection with the south shore of Stanley Harbour and the mili- tary station.

Wall and ditch to naval depôt.
Gates and bridge.
The Settlement of Port Stanley is supposed to terminate on the east at the cemetery. Seven hundred yards east of this, and under the Murray Heights, I would place the military head-quarters and depôts.
The constructions to be of wood on stone foundations.
The military station to contain head-quarter offices and quarters, barrack huts for all services, Royal Engineer office and yard, Royal Artillery, Commissariat, and military stores, offices wharf and camber.
On the north side of Port Stanley, under the Engineer Ridge, I would place the submarine mining depôt and camber, which would there be in proximity by land to Ordnance Point.
The main magazine to be on the Navy Peninsula, near the present remains of a boundary wall.
As a jetty would be required, and the water is deep near the shore, the coals for the Royal Navy could be landed and stored here also, if the space in the naval depôt was insufficient.
The naval depôt would, it is presumed, be inclosed on the west and south sides by a high wall and ditch.
There might be gates and bridge near the reservoir, and on the top or near the top of Loopholes for defence on Maga- the hill (Magazine Hill), loopholes and places for machine-guns to fire upon the slight gap
zine Hill.
Military hospital.
in the watershed of the Murray Heights.
An enemy could get some cover here from both the south and east redoubts, and might rush through the gap.
The military hospital should be included in the military station.
