Or 160,000 dollars, at 6 dollars a ton; 26,666 tons per annum, 2,300 a month.
This must only be taken as a very roughly approximate estimate, but the cost of machinery, making of railway, and working expenses of the mine, have been taken from information obtained on the spot from a former employé of the last Company.
The items may appear high, but interest at 10 per cent. per annum only has been allowed, and investors in a Company for working mines so far from England would probably expect much more.
A large reserve fund has also been provided for, as the mines are liable to sudden and heavy damage from flood and fire.
The cost of a railway from the mines to Victoria Harbour, with the wharves and depôts necessary for shipping coal there, has been estimated for, as during the north-east monsoon ships cannot take in coal at Raffles Anchorage, nor would it always be safe to send it round in lighters from there to Victoria Harbour.
Any Company undertaking to work the coal mines should make the railway.
* Three hundred of these were men who had temporarily taken refuge in Labuan from troubles caused by head-hunters and other civil strife.
